Today, Vantage is announcing Configurable X Axis for Cost Reports, giving customers more control over how costs are grouped and visualized. Customers can now choose whether the X axis represents date or another dimension, such as service, provider, charge type, or a tag like team.

Cost Report with the X axis configured to segment by service

Previously, Cost Reports exclusively showed date on the X axis, and allowed for custom grouping within the chart by dimensions such as provider, service, or tag. While useful for tracking changes over time, this limited customers who wanted to directly compare costs across services, teams, or other categories within the same binning without manually reshaping their data.

Now, customers can select the X axis of their Cost Report via the new “Chart Settings” dropdown at the top of a Cost Report to switch between date and other Group By dimensions Vantage supports. When the X axis is set to a dimension other than date, the chart will update to reflect the selected binning on the X axis, with date becoming the segmentation within the chart itself. This allows customers to create unique comparative views of their data that groups categories of data closer together for easier analysis, such as comparing costs for a team by quarter or services by month.

Configurable X Axis is now available to all Vantage users. To try it out, open any Cost Report and use the new “Chart Settings” dropdown at the top of the report. For more details, see the Cost Reports documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is being launched today?

Vantage is launching Configurable X Axis for Cost Reports. Customers can now choose whether the X axis shows date or another grouping dimension such as service, provider, charge type, or tag (e.g., team).

2. Who is the customer?

Any Vantage user who builds and analyzes Cost Reports. This feature is particularly useful for FinOps practitioners, finance teams, and engineers who want to compare costs across services or teams without exporting data.

3. How much does this cost?

There is no additional cost. Configurable X Axis is included for all Vantage users.

4. How do I use Configurable X Axis?

In any Cost Report, use the new Chart Settings menu at the top of the report, and then select your X axis Group By dimension. By default, all reports are grouped by date on the X axis. You can switch to another dimension such as provider, service, charge type, or tag. When you select a non-date dimension, the chart segmentation will flip, with date bins becoming the breakdown across the chart. When an X axis is chosen, the Y axis Group By dimension will be automatically set to Date.

5. What dimensions can I set to be the X axis of a report?

You can set the X axis to be any of the following:

  • Date
  • Billing Account
  • Linked Account
  • Region
  • Service
  • Resource ID
  • Provider
  • Cost Category
  • Cost Subcategory
  • Charge Type
  • Tagged Status
  • Tag

6. What chart types is the Configurable X Axis compatible with?

The Configurable X Axis is compatible with bar charts—both multi-bar and stacked bar charts. You cannot use configurable X axis for line charts, area charts, or pie charts.

7. What is the maximum number of groupings I can have on an X axis?

The maximum number of groupings you can have on an X axis is 10 for the multi-bar chart and 20 for the stacked bar chart. Once this limit is hit, all remaining items will be aggregated into an “Other” bucket.

8. Can I set the X axis for a Saved Cost Report?

The saved report will reflect your selected X axis setting. Other users who open the same report will see the chosen X axis.

9. Can I export a report with a non-date X axis?

Yes. Reports with a non-date X axis can be exported just like any other report, including via CSV and PDF.

10. How does this interact with existing filters and groupings?

Filters apply as normal. For example, you can filter a Cost Report to only AWS, then set the X axis to “Team” to compare team costs within AWS. The segmentation will always adjust to reflect the chosen X axis.

11. Can I add a Cost Report with a different X axis to a Dashboard?

Yes, Cost Reports with non-date X axis can be added to Dashboards like any other Cost Report.

12. What is the behavior if I change Chart Type?

You’ll be asked to confirm the change to the chart type. If you proceed, the grouping will reset to By Date.

13. Can I view my Annotations when viewing a Cost Report grouped by a non-date dimension?

Annotations will not show in the chart itself; however, you are able to view your existing annotations by clicking on the Annotations icon in the top right of a Cost Report.

14. Can I configure my X axis via API and Terraform?

Not at this time, but support for the API and Terraform will be coming soon.
