Today, Vantage is expanding its AI-native documentation experience to include support for Terraform-related questions. With this update, the Vantage Docs MCP and embedded AI Assistant can now provide contextual answers not only about Vantage features within the console, but also about the Vantage Terraform provider, and help you write and troubleshoot Terraform configurations.

Until now, the Vantage Docs MCP and AI Assistant exclusively focused on product content, like user workflows and FinOps best practices. As many customers increasingly rely on the Vantage Terraform provider to automate infrastructure and integrate Vantage into their workflows, it became clear that our docs should also help with Terraform-specific questions. Previously, users had to piece together documentation and examples from our FinOps as Code repository and write the code themselves. Now, AI agents can generate that code on your behalf, streamlining the process and eliminating the need to consult multiple sources.

Troubleshooting a Terraform configuration with Claude

This release extends the AI capabilities of the Vantage Docs. Now you can ask questions like:

  • "How do I create a Virtual Tag using Terraform?"
  • "How do I import existing Cost Reports into Terraform state?"
  • "What environment variables do I need for the Vantage Terraform provider?"

The Vantage Docs AI Assistant and any AI client (e.g., Claude, Goose) connected through the Vantage Docs MCP will use this context to provide explanations, examples, and relevant links. Use this guidance to build out your Terraform code or automate workflows. When accessed through the Docs MCP, you can also connect to the Vantage MCP, enabling your AI agent to interact with your specific Vantage account (for example, gathering existing Virtual Tags or generating context-aware Terraform code and Cost Reports).

To get started with the Vantage Docs MCP, visit the setup guide. You can also ask questions using the AI Assistant chat box at the bottom of any page on the Vantage Docs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is being launched today?

Vantage is launching AI-powered documentation that now supports the Vantage Terraform provider, in addition to Vantage product features. Because the Vantage Terraform provider is central to many Infrastructure as Code workflows, adding context helps engineers get accurate guidance when working with the provider.

2. Who is the customer?

This feature benefits DevOps engineers, platform teams, and FinOps practitioners who use the Vantage Terraform provider to manage resources and automate workflows.

3. How much does this feature cost?

This enhancement is free and available to all users today at https://docs.vantage.sh.

4. What kinds of questions can I ask now?

Examples include questions about Vantage Terraform resources or data sources, such as:

  • "How do I create a Cost Report using the Vantage Terraform provider?"
  • "What's the syntax for creating a vantage_folder resource?"
  • "How do I import existing Cost Reports into Terraform state?"

5. What’s the difference between the Vantage Docs MCP and AI Assistant?

  • The Vantage Docs MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that you connect to AI clients, like Claude Desktop or Cursor, for programmatic access to the Vantage documentation.
  • The AI Assistant is the built-in chat interface available at the bottom of any page on docs.vantage.sh.

Both tools provide the same Terraform and product guidance, but the MCP allows integration with your preferred AI tools.

6. How do I get set up with the Vantage Docs MCP?

Visit the Vantage Docs MCP setup guide for step-by-step instructions on how to connect the MCP server to your preferred AI client (Claude, Cursor, Goose, etc.).

7. Where can I find the Vantage Terraform provider documentation?

The Vantage Terraform provider documentation is publicly available on the Terraform Registry, which is the canonical source of truth for provider resources, data sources, and usage.

For convenience, and so the Vantage AI Assistant and Docs MCP can use it as context, we’ve also mirrored that documentation on the Vantage docs site, at docs.vantage.sh. If an AI response includes a link, it will typically point to this mirrored version (for example, at https://docs.vantage.sh/terraform_docs/resources/cost_report) so you can easily explore related content in one place. This content will stay updated along with the official Terraform documentation. If you’re looking for the official provider documentation, the Terraform Registry remains the primary source.
