The Challenge

Boomi’s engineering organization runs a large, distributed cloud footprint that powers its core integration platform. As usage expanded across teams and environments, maintaining financial visibility and accountability became increasingly complex.

The FinOps team wanted to move from reactive cost tracking to a more efficient, proactive practice. Their existing cost management tool had grown rigid and slow to evolve, making even simple reporting difficult. Engineers often had to dig through data to answer basic cost questions, and innovation on the platform had stalled.

When the Boomi team began evaluating new solutions, Vantage stood out for its technical agility, API-forward design, and partnership-driven approach. After six years on their previous cost management tool, Boomi migrated to Vantage in just six weeks, a complete transition that brought every engineer onto the new platform quickly and without disruption.

Vantage’s virtual tagging made that speed possible. Boomi imported years of existing business dimensions directly into Vantage without rebuilding its tagging structure across accounts or services, avoiding what would have been months of manual setup.

Once live, Boomi’s FinOps team began using Vantage’s multidimensional reporting to explore costs from every angle, by service, product, project, feature, and more.

Unlike their previous tool, which limited views to rigid hierarchies, Vantage lets Boomi create flexible dashboards on demand. Finance can track cost of goods sold (COGS) versus R&D in seconds, while engineering managers can drill into service-level metrics without waiting for data exports or custom queries, saving hours every week.

Many providers can’t handle multidimensional reporting. With Vantage, we can quickly pivot from a high-level view to deep cost analysis, then roll it back up when we just need a summary. That flexibility saves hours every week.

Automating Accountability with API-Forward Tooling

Known for its API-forward design, Vantage integrates directly into the tools engineering teams already use – Jira, Slack, Terraform, and more – making FinOps a natural part of daily workflows. Boomi built on that foundation to automate accountability and close the loop between detection and action.

When an anomaly is detected, Boomi’s automation uses Vantage’s API to open a Jira ticket containing the full context – cost data, affected services, and direct report links. The same anomalies are pushed into Slack, ensuring teams see issues immediately and can resolve them without delay.

If an anomaly comes through, a ticket opens automatically in the engineer’s backlog. They get everything they need to take action—no back-and-forth, no waiting on us.

A recent example underscored the value of that automation. One team accidentally enabled CloudWatch metric streams for an observability tool, collecting all metrics and driving an unexpected cost spike of roughly $300 per day. Vantage’s anomaly detection caught it the same day, routed the alert to the responsible team, and engineers corrected the configuration within hours.

That loop, detect - assign - act, has strengthened cost accountability across the organization while freeing FinOps to focus on higher-level analysis.

Laying the Groundwork for AI-Driven FinOps

Boomi’s next phase is pushing FinOps automation even further – using the Vantage MCP as the foundation for AI-driven cost analysis.

The FinOps team has already built an internal Slack chatbot that connects to Vantage through MCP, allowing engineers to query cloud cost data conversationally. Their roadmap includes connecting the MCP into Atlassian and telemetry systems so that AI can correlate cost anomalies to feature releases or Jira tickets – automating root-cause triage.

We’re experimenting with AI to understand where cost spikes originate. Eventually, we want an agent that can tell us what happened, who owns it, and whether it’s tied to a specific deployment. Vantage’s MCP connection makes that possible.

Boomi’s careful, stepwise approach ensures humans remain in control, but the foundation for AI-assisted FinOps is firmly in place. One that turns reactive insights into automated, intelligent decision-making.

Looking Forward

Vantage remains central as Boomi expands automation and intelligence across its FinOps practice. The team plans to extend its use of Vantage across emerging AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic – tracking model usage, efficiency, and cost impact in real time.

Boomi is also among the first customers to beta test the Vantage FinOps Agent, an AI agent that proactively identifies cloud waste, alerts teams, and (with approval) remediates issues while keeping a human in the loop and logging actions for transparency.
