Turning Cost Awareness Into Engineering Action: Vantage’s New Optimization Experience
Increase visibility and shorten the path from insight to action.

Today, Vantage is upgrading its Cost Recommendations experience to improve visibility and reduce time to action, enabling rapid cost optimization across the organization. The new interface provides resource-level visibility with advanced filtering by tags, regions, and accounts, enabling teams to create curated optimization views tailored to their organization. Users can now utilize the Recommendations page for end-to-end recommendation analysis to prioritize high-impact savings and take action faster with clearer context.

Vantage customers use Cost Recommendations to cut costs and ensure their cloud resources operate efficiently. The Recommendations page has historically provided a simple, category-centric view that provided clear descriptions and summaries of cost savings opportunities, with links to Active Resource reports to perform robust analysis of impacted resources. As our customers have matured in their FinOps practices and decentralized their cost management practices, they requested more detailed capabilities, like granular resource-based filters (such as Virtual Tags) to isolate recommendations by team, manage and track state of recommendations by resource, and examine resources of multiple recommendation types simultaneously. The existing workflow often required aggregating data across multiple Active Resource reports to get a complete picture of recommendations relevant to a specific team, and customers wanted this analysis consolidated in one place.
Now, with the redesigned Cost Recommendations experience, Vantage users can view all recommendations at the resource level in one place, with new filtering and archiving capabilities to create optimization reports tailored to their teams. Each resource-specific recommendation can now be managed individually and includes metadata about the top recommendation, a "Detected Date" showing when Vantage discovered it, count of resources affected, and the ability to archive at the resource level. Users can filter recommendations by expanded dimensions—such as Tags (including provider tags and Virtual Tags), Region, Account, and Date Detected. The interface dynamically updates key metrics, like total savings potential and impacted resource count, as filters are applied. This enables teams to create highly curated views, such as identifying all recommendations for their Data Engineering team's resources in us-east-1 discovered in the last week. Teams can dismiss specific resources, like an unattached EBS volume needed for ephemeral workloads, while keeping similar recommendations visible. These curated views can be shared across the organization for ongoing monitoring.
This new experience is live for all customers today. To see it in action, visit the Recommendations tab in the Vantage console. For more information, see our Recommendations documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is being launched today?
Vantage is launching a redesigned Cost Recommendations experience that makes optimizations more actionable through enhanced filtering, visualization, and resource-level management capabilities. The new interface enables teams to create curated views of savings opportunities filtered by tags, regions, and accounts, while providing dynamic insights into total savings potential and the ability to archive individual resources rather than entire recommendation categories.
2. Who is the customer?
Any Vantage user managing cloud costs, especially FinOps teams, engineering leads, and finance stakeholders looking to drive cost accountability and action.
3. How much does this cost?
This updated experience is included for all Vantage customers at no additional charge.
4. What are the new capabilities available in the new Recommendations experience?
Users will be able to perform the following with the new Recommendations experience:
- Filter based on new resource-based dimensions (provider, region, and tag)
- Archive by resource and by recommendation category
- View recommendations by resource on the Recommendations page
5. What data can I filter and sort my Recommendations list on?
You can filter based on the following attributes:
- Date Detected
- Billing Account
- Account
- Region
- Provider
- Tags (including provider tags and Virtual Tags)
6. How do I archive a specific resource’s recommendation?
When viewing a set of recommendations on the new Recommendations page, you can archive just a single resource by clicking on the "Archive" icon next to that resource. This will move just that resource's recommendation to the Archived tab.
7. How do I archive an entire recommendation category?
From the recommendation category tile, click the archive button on the right (looks like an arrow in a box pointing down). The recommendation category will be moved to the Archived tab. When you archive an entire recommendation category, all current and future resource-based recommendations will be archived. If you restore this recommendation, all existing recommendations will be restored.
8. What permissions do I need in Vantage to archive a recommendation?
You must be an Owner, Integration Owner, or Editor in order to archive a recommendation.
9. What happens if a recommendation for a resource goes away?
If a recommendation is no longer valid, Vantage will remove it from your recommendations page, regardless of if it is currently an active recommendation or archived recommendation.
10. How is “Date Detected” determined?
This is based on the original date the permutation of the recommendation you are viewing was detected by Vantage. If the amount of the savings changes, but the recommendation stays the same, this date will not change. However, if the recommendation permutation changes, the Date Detected will change.
As an example, you have a gp3 EBS volume that has a rightsizing recommendation generated on day 0. On day 1, the recommended throughput for this recommendation goes down, but it is still being recommended to be rightsized, so the Detected Date does not change. On day 7, Vantage recommends that this volume be deleted entirely, because it is now idle. The Date Detected would now be changed to day 7.
11. How long will recommendations be retained?
There is no limit to how long recommendations will be retained. As long as it is a valid recommendation, it will be retained indefinitely.
12. Many of my recommendations have a Detected Date in October 2025, but I think they have existed longer. Why is that?
Vantage started tracking detection date for recommendations that were not tracked previously. Examples of this include:
- DynamoDB Provisioned Capacity Mode
- EBS Generational Modernization
- CloudWatch Log Retention
- S3 Intelligent Tiering Recommendations
- Azure Unattached Disk
- Unused Datadog Metrics
Each of these recommendations will have launch dates based on when Vantage added Detected Date to these resources in October 2025.
13. Can I share a filtered view of recommendations with my team?
Yes, when you apply filters to create a specific view of recommendations, the URL updates to reflect those filters. You can share this URL with team members, and they will see the same filtered view when they access it.
14. Will my archived recommendations be included in the total savings calculations?
No, archived recommendations are excluded from the total savings potential displayed at the top of the Recommendations page. Only active recommendations contribute to the savings metrics.
15. Can I access my recommendations programmatically?
Yes, the GET /recommendations API has been updated with attributes, such as created_at and resources_affected_count to match what is available in the UI.
Additionally, there are two new endpoints:
/recommendations/:token/resources- Returns all Active Resources, including Recommendation Actions, referenced in this Recommendation./recommendations/:token/resources/:resource_token- Returns a single Active Resource, including Recommendation Actions, referenced in this Recommendation.
16. How do I find my recommendation token?
You can use the GET /recommendations API to return a list of all your existing recommendations and their associated tokens.
17. Can I export my filtered recommendations list through the UI?
The ability to export a list of recommendations through the UI is coming soon.
18. How frequently are recommendations updated?
Recommendations are updated daily based on your resource usage patterns and configurations. The "Date Detected" field shows when each specific recommendation was first identified.
19. What purchase configuration is used for making recommendations for financial commitments?
By default, Vantage will use 1 year, No Upfront as the purchase configuration for Reserved Instances and Savings Plans. If you have set a default Savings Plan configuration using Autopilot, Vantage will override previous configurations and use this for your recommendations.
20. Do my filters set in the Recommendations page persist to Active Resource recommendation pages?
Yes, if you navigate to an Active Resource Report from a filtered view of the Recommendations page, your filter will be applied in this view as well, except for Date Detected filters. Do note that Active Resource Reports do not take into account Archived status of a recommendation, so all resources will be shown in Active Resource Reports.
21. Do non-resource-based recommendations, such as Financial Commitments, have recommendation counts?
These recommendation types, such as AWS Savings Plans, AWS Reserved Instances, Datadog Commitments, and other financial commitments do not present unique permutations of recommendation counts at this time.
