Vantage Launches Extended Support Recommendations for Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and ElastiCache
Identify managed services approaching or incurring premium support charges and plan upgrades proactively.

Today, Vantage announces the general availability of Extended Support and End of Life Recommendations for Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and ElastiCache, allowing customers to identify managed services that are approaching or currently incurring premium support charges in order to proactively plan upgrades, optimize costs, and maintain compliance with AWS support policies.

AWS has expanded paid lifecycle support across more managed services over the last two years. Amazon OpenSearch Service announced Standard Support and Extended Support timelines for legacy Elasticsearch and OpenSearch versions in November 2024, and Amazon ElastiCache introduced Extended Support for Redis OSS versions 4 and 5 in 2025. Previously, customers had to track these lifecycle changes using Support Calendars for OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and ElastiCache release calendars, pricing pages, and service consoles to understand which resources were nearing Extended Support or end-of-life. AWS does not provide native recommendations for moving off of versions that are outside of standard support periods, which often led to unknown additional costs for teams.
Now, with the launch of Extended Support and End of Life Recommendations for Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and ElastiCache, Vantage automatically surfaces recommendations for instances currently incurring Extended Support fees, as well as those set to enter Extended Support within the next three months with projected cost estimates. Vantage also automatically annotates supported OpenSearch Service domains and ElastiCache clusters with support metadata in Active Resources, indicating their current support type (Standard or Extended) and the support calendar with end dates of each support phase. For OpenSearch Service, this includes both legacy Elasticsearch versions and OpenSearch versions with published support timelines. For ElastiCache, this includes Redis OSS versions with AWS Extended Support timelines. Vantage will guide engineers on which version they need to upgrade to in order to avoid additional charges, as well as provide CLI commands and direct linking to the AWS console to perform the upgrade.
Extended Support and End of Life Recommendations for Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and ElastiCache are now available to all Vantage customers with an AWS connection. To get started, navigate to Active Resources and Recommendations in the Vantage console. To learn more, see the Resource Reports and Cost Recommendations documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is being launched today?
Vantage is launching Extended Support and End of Life Recommendations for Amazon OpenSearch Service (including legacy Elasticsearch versions) and Amazon ElastiCache. Customers can now receive recommendations for their resources that are currently incurring Extended Support, and are about to enter Extended Support in the next 90 days, on the Cost Recommendations page. There will also be additional metadata available within Resource Reports related to Extended Support for custom reporting.
2. Who is the customer? / Who has access to this?
Any Vantage user who has connected AWS as a provider and uses Amazon OpenSearch Service (including legacy Elasticsearch versions) and Amazon ElastiCache.
3. How much does this cost?
There is no additional cost to see these recommendations; however, if you are on a free trial, the specifics of the recommendations will be obscured.
4. How do these recommendations work?
Vantage reads supported AWS resource metadata, including engine family and version, and compares those values against AWS-published lifecycle calendars for OpenSearch Service and ElastiCache. When a resource is already in Extended Support, Vantage surfaces the current cost impact. When a resource is nearing a support milestone, Vantage estimates future cost exposure and recommends an upgrade path based on the next supported version family or version range.
5. What services and versions are covered at launch?
At launch, Vantage covers:
- Amazon OpenSearch Service domains running legacy Elasticsearch versions and OpenSearch versions with published Standard Support and Extended Support timelines
- Amazon ElastiCache clusters running Redis OSS versions with published Extended Support timelines, beginning with Redis OSS v4 and v5
6. What information is available in Active Resources?
When viewing an OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, or ElastiCache Active Resource Report, you will now have additional metadata fields for Support Status (values will be “standard_support”, “in_extended_support”, or “nearing_extended_support”) and End of Standard Support Date. With this information, you can curate reports for teams based on their lifecycle status and upcoming End of Support dates.
7. What recommendations are surfaced in Recommendations?
On the Cost Recommendations page, you will receive two recommendations related to Extended Support for these services:
- Resources currently incurring Extended Support charges
- Resources approaching lifecycle deadlines where an upgrade would avoid future cost or operational risk
8. How are projected Extended Support costs calculated?
Vantage estimates projected cost using the resource’s observed configuration and the pricing model AWS publishes for that service. For OpenSearch Service, this includes the regional Extended Support fee applied per normalized instance hour. For ElastiCache, this includes the relevant Extended Support premium for supported Redis OSS versions. These projections are intended to help prioritize upgrades, not replace final AWS billing.
9. What should customers upgrade to?
For OpenSearch Service, Vantage recommends upgrading to a version family that is still under Standard Support and not nearing another lifecycle deadline. For ElastiCache, the primary recommendation is to move to ElastiCache for Valkey or to a newer Redis OSS version supported by AWS. For all recommendations, Vantage will determine the next version number that does not have an Extended Support date within the next three months. However, it is recommended to upgrade to the highest allowable version based on your application dependencies.
