Vantage Launches Alert Thresholds for Anomaly Detection

by Vantage Team

Anomaly Thresholds

Today Vantage adds the ability to set custom alert thresholds on cost anomaly detection so alerts are only sent for cost increases which are above a certain dollar amount. This gives customers the ability to be alerted in Slack, Teams, or by email if, for example, an anomaly of more than $10,000 has occurred.

Previously, it was possible to select “Configure Alert” on the “Anomalies” tab of any Cost Report to be alerted if Vantage detected a cost anomaly for that report. However, alerts could be triggered for any cost increase that was materially above trend, even if the actual dollar amount was small relative to the organization’s total spend.

Anomaly Thresholds

Setting an alert threshold on a cost anomaly alert.

Now, users can set an alert threshold which is a dollar amount that must be exceeded in order for an alert to be sent. This ensures that alerts can be tailored to the level of spend or a specific service. For example, a customer spending $500,000 per month on the cloud may choose to have an alert threshold of $10,000 on the “All Resources” report and a threshold of $1,000 on a report that tracks logging costs.

To configure a Cost Anomaly Alert, head to any Cost Report and select the “Anomalies” tab. To learn more about this feature, please consult our Anomaly Detection documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is being launched today?

Today, Vantage is adding the ability to set custom thresholds on Cost Anomaly Alerts so alerts are only sent to Slack, Teams, or email when the anomaly is greater than a set dollar amount.

2. Who is the customer?

The customer is any Vantage user of anomaly detection or Cost Anomaly Alerts.

3. How much does the cost?

Anomaly detection and alerting are available on every Vantage plan.

4. How do I configure an alert threshold?

Select a Cost Report and go to the “Anomalies” tab in the top left of the report. Click “Configure Alert” to set the threshold for receiving alerts for anomalies on the selected report.

5. How are Cost Anomaly Alerts different than Budget Alerts?

Budget Alerts are sent based on progress towards a set budget, e.g. if costs are at 50% of the budget 10 days into the month. Cost Anomaly Alerts are sent based on an anomaly detection algorithm, for example if there is a one day increase of $1,000 on a report.

6. How does the anomaly detection algorithm work?

A machine learning algorithm is trained on every cost category for every service of a Cost Report. For more details, please consult the Anomaly Detection documentation.

7. Will the anomaly still be detected if it is below the alert threshold?

Yes. This threshold only affects alerts which are sent to Slack, Teams, or email. You will still be able to view anomalies of any amount in the “Anomalies” tab of the Cost Report.

8. Can I configure the alert based on a percentage instead of a dollar value?

Not at this time. Percentage based thresholds are available on Budget Alerts but thresholds for Cost Anomaly Alerts are based on a dollar amount.
